Director of Tennis

Franklin, the Director of Tennis for Portland Tennis & Education at St. Johns Racquet Center, discovered his love for the sport in 2011 and soon after joined the PT&E High School Academy while attending Grant High School. He later transferred to Franklin High School where he led his team to their 1st PIL City Title while winning the PIL singles title himself.

Franklin’s passion for the game continued to flourish after high school and he received his USPTA certification in 2015 while working on his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Portland State University. Franklin loves the technical aspects of tennis and is well regarded by the players he coaches for his disciplined and fundamental approach to the game.

Franklin began working as a Coach/Tutor in 2014 and continued to develop the academic and athletic skills of the scholar athletes of PT&E. In addition to his work at PT&E, Franklin is the Boys Varsity Tennis Coach at Roosevelt High School and an assistant tennis coach at Pacific University.

Born and raised in Portland, OR, Vu attended Franklin High School, where he played varsity tennis all four years and developed his love and passion for the game. 

While playing tennis in high school, he befriended several members of the PT&E academy. In the Fall of 2015, Vu joined the PT&E family as a volunteer. In the summer of 2016, Vu obtained his USPTA Certification and has been working with all levels and ages since.

Vu is popular among his students for his fundamental approach to coaching and high energy. He is an assistant varsity tennis coach at Roosevelt High School.


Nathan Gangelhoff

Former NAIA player

Nate is a native Oregonian and graduated from Southridge High School in 2013, having played 3 years of varsity tennis. Nate then moved to Lakeland, Florida to attend Southeastern University. He played all four years and was voted team captain for two of those years. Finishing with a match record of 34-12 (both doubles and singles).

After graduating Nate went on to coach at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida for the next two summers. Coaching some of the top recruits in the nation for D1 collegiate tennis and working with 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Monica Puig and 2018 US Open Women’s Champion Naomi Osaka. Nate has coached tennis of all levels and ages for the past 5 years through the USTA, City of Lakeland, All Saints Academy High School and the Evert Academy. Nate is incredibly excited to coach here at St. Johns Racquet Center!

Ben Bui

USPTA Certified Pro

Ben loves to play and teach tennis, because of the life skills it teaches such as; constant self-improvement and a love of continual learning. Ben brings this scholarly approach to his coaching and encourages his students to see tennis from this perspective. In order to learn more and gain those perspectives, when Ben isn’t playing competitively, he spends a lot of time off the court reading about tennis and reviewing old tennis matches.

Ben describes his teaching style holistic and  practical, and he tries to use as many examples and situations as possible. Ben grew up playing tennis Portland at Benson High School. He eventually went on to play in the Portland Tennis & Education High School academy. After leaving high school he went on to play for the University of Portland Tennis Club team , where he helped the team qualify for the Tennis on Campus Invitational in Arizona. He then went on to obtain his USPTA certification and is working with all levels and ranges.
